ABOUT THE FILM: One Hundred and One Dalmatians, a 1961 American animated adventure film, was produced by Walt Disney Productions and is based on Dodie Smith's 1956 novel, 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians.' Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, and Wolfgang Reitherman, it marked Disney's 17th animated feature film. The story revolves around a litter of Dalmatian puppies kidnapped by the nefarious Cruella de Vil, who intends to use their fur for making coats. Pongo and Perdita, the parents of the puppies, embark on a daring journey to rescue their offspring, ultimately saving an additional 84 puppies purchased from pet shops, resulting in a total of 101 Dalmatians.
The film made its theatrical debut on January 25, 1961, distributed by Buena Vista Distribution and proved to be a significant box office success. It helped Disney recover from the financial setback experienced with 'Sleeping Beauty,' a more costly production released two years earlier. Its commercial success was attributed not only to its box office revenue but also to cost-saving animation techniques, including the use of xerography during the traditional animation cel inking and painting process.
Subsequently, Disney released a live-action adaptation titled '101 Dalmatians' in 1996, followed by a sequel, '102 Dalmatians,' in 2000. An animated direct-to-video sequel, '101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure,' was released in 2003. In addition, a live-action spin-off/prequel, 'Cruella,' directed by Craig Gillespie, was scheduled for release on May 28, 2021.
