ABOUT THE IMAGE: Original Production Model Sheet from 'How to Play Baseball.' This model sheet features an all time Disney favorite, Goofy! This piece comes with a certificate of authenticity.

ABOUT THE FILM: Walt Disney Productions created and RKO Radio Pictures released 'How to Play Baseball,' a cartoon starring Goofy, in September 1942. This animated short, directed by Jack Kinney, was specifically produced at the request of Samuel Goldwyn. It made its debut as an accompaniment to the 1942 feature film 'The Pride of the Yankees.'

Goofy takes on the task of illustrating America's beloved pastime, engaging in a solo game where he assumes all positions on the field. The animated short humorously outlines the fundamental aspects of baseball, including equipment, uniforms, player positions, and pitching techniques, along with the distinctive behaviors of the athletes. The narrative transitions to a pivotal moment in the World Series, featuring the fictional teams Blue Sox and Gray Sox (potentially satirical versions of the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox). With the Blue Sox leading by three runs and maintaining a no-hitter, the Grays stage a remarkable comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. A sequence of events unfolds as the Grays load the bases, culminating in a decisive hit that clears the bases.

As the game reaches a tie, the play at the plate becomes too close to call for the umpire, leading to a heated argument and an unresolved conclusion. The narrator wraps up the short by extolling the virtues that establish baseball as America's quintessential sport.

ABOUT THE MEDIUM: A Model Sheet consists of a collection of character sketches showcasing various stances and facial expressions of a cartoon character. These sheets served as a means to ensure a consistent appearance and demeanor for a character during the production process, facilitating collaboration among multiple artists working on a single cartoon.
