ABOUT THE SERIES: Groovie Goolies is often considered Filmation’s most successful original animated creation. A spin-off from the Sabrina series—which itself spun off from Archie, both based on popular comic books—it achieved remarkable ratings for CBS Saturday mornings. When The Groovie Goolies and Friends entered daytime syndication, it became the umbrella series for other Filmation cartoons, including The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty and MUSH*. There was no question that Groovie Goolies stood as Filmation’s defining self-created series.

ABOUT THE MEDIUM: A non-production animation cel created by a studio for promotional purposes of a series, and the characters are usually depicted in an "ideal” pose. Slides and transparencies are created from this art and sent to magazines and newspapers in order to gather interest in a series. These pieces are meticulously hand-painted by skilled studio artists onto sheets of celluloid acetate. Once painted, they are photographed against a backdrop painting to capture a single frame of the final production.
